Documentary film screening at SJEC

On August 27, the department of journalism and mass communication of St. Joseph’s Evening College in association with Pedestrian Pictures organised a screening of the documentary, ‘S.D Saroj Dutta and His Times’ at SJEC.

The documentary directed by Kasturi Basu traces the life of a communist poet and radical journalist, Saroj Dutta. The screening began with an inauguration which was followed by the screening of the film. After the film screening, the audience got a chance to interact with the director, Kasturi Basu. Ms. Basu shared some interesting facts about the documentary.

“Saroj Dutta was a popular journalist and suddenly he was killed. It is important for us to go back and find out what caused his death. What was his ideology and what was his writings that led to his death. Even to this day these questions are not answered,” said Ms. Basu.

"It was a good explanation of Naxalbari movement which was started in Calcutta and the other states too, and quite different documentary," said Aanchal Singh from II BA

“One can admire the directors for their efforts in bringing about a detailed study on the life of Saroj Dutta. It helps us to fight the present political situation  finding solution from the past,” said Mary Merlin Saniya from I MA English. The event was co-ordinated by Ms. Indumathi S, Assistant Professor, Dept of Journalism and Mass Communication.
